The first Australian Services/AD Water Polo mens team was selected in 1983 and the first womens team selected in 1987. The team usually tours to the Australian Country Water Polo Championships annually with additional/combined tours over the years to the Arafura Games in Darwin and one overseas tour to England in 2006. There have been a number of years where the womens team have not toured due to a lack of numbers however they have been very well represented of late and have been very successful at the last few tournaments they have attended.
Over the years a number of Australian Defence/Australian Services players have been selected in the Australian Country Representative side.

In 1998 no team nomination was submitted to the Australian Country Association and so there was no AD team tour that year although Craig Spence and Phil Fletcher were selected in the QLD Country team and so kept some AD representation going. Due to a lack of team nominations the 2000 Australian Country Championships scheduled to be held in Kalgoorlie WA were cancelled. The 2003 Arafura Games were cancelled due to the SARS Epidemic in South East Asia but as many Australian Sports teams were still interested in going to Darwin the Games organisers ran the Darwin Sports Festival in its place and as a result the 2003 Australian Country Championships were still held.
