Arafura Games, Darwin NT, 1997
Placings: Men - 4th Aus Country, 5th Arafura
Women - No Team
This year there was only a mens team deployed to Darwin for the Arafura Games. The team was once again coached by Chris Turner but with no Jud or Dion was significantly weaker than the previous Arafura team.
This was also the year that the Chinese national team played and they were awesome. They thumped all the other teams with the NT team copping the worst beating of all and going into the record books for the heaviest defeat ever in an International Tournament. To ensure we didn't take the NT's spot we played a very defensive game plan and ended up going down 18 to 3 which kept China to their lowest score against any team at the tournament, quite an achievement we thought.
There was also Drug Testing this year carried out by the Australian Sports Commission and old Craigus got the nod and instantly went into stage fright mode. So after many hours of waiting Craig was finally able to pee and we were finally able to leave the pool. In the game against WA, Pratty yelled out "who's marking the neanderthal" and indicated a player who had played a number of games in the Australian Olympic Team. This player then proceeded to cut loose with some very physical (and not so friendly) play and banged in about 6 or 7 goals straight and then at the end of the game asked Pratty "who's the neanderthal now?". So we thanked Pratty for that extra sensory experience as we limped away from the pool that day. Milo also provided Adrian and myself some additional ammunition for banter when returning to Tin City one day by showing his RAAF ID instead of the usual Arafura Games Pass and forcing the poor AC on the gate into a frenzy of saluting!
