This year the championships returned to Sydney at Randwick Barracks. Numbers were a bit down in the mens competition with only 3 teams competing in the mens comp, NSW, SQLD and the Vikings comprising team members from NT, WA and VIC. The womens comp had 2 full teams SQLD and the Allstars with members from ADFA, NSW, WA, NT and NQLD which made it one of the best turnouts for the ladies in recent years.
The women played a series of games against each other with the young SQLD team improving markedly over the week against a very experienced NSW Team that included Australian Country rep Carrie Fettes. The final was a very even affair with the first quarter finishing 4-3 to the All stars with Bri McConville and Carrie Fettes scoring 2 each while Kate Bertwistle performed strongly for SQLD. The second quarter was once again close with 2 quick goals to Jemma Osmand keeping the SQLD team in the game at 7-6 down. The third quarter again saw a tight tussle ensue with goals from the two Kates and Mel being answered by the All Stars team players Carrie and Cassie to finish 10-9 to the All Stars. But the loss of outstanding player Bri McConville on 3 fouls meant the last quarter would be a tough battle. The fourth quarter saw the All Stars call on all their experience to kick away with Millie coming out of goals to score 2 very important goals backed up by 2 more to Cassie Armstrong to round the game out at 14-10. The game was a worthy Grand Final and the new players on show from both teams mean that the AD Womens team are a genuine gold medal chance at the upcoming Australian Country Championships. The womens best and fairest was won by Kate Bertwistle from SQLD who was outstanding throughout the tournament.
The mens competition was won comfortably by NSW who were a very strong team with many AD reps already in their number but the unavailability of Nick Whitehead, Ben Scott and a long term injury to Dan Lister might have given the other teams some hope that they might be a chance. However the addition of the Navy's Deloraine brothers more than compensated for the missing players and they were much too strong for all the other teams this year. The final was played out between South QLD and NSW and despite the Queenslanders drawing first blood and scoring first, they were unable to contain a rampant NSW team. The NSW team ran a very disciplined counter attack which the SQLDers found almost impossible to stop with the final score a very one sided 24 - 4. Eli Deloraine took out the best player award in another commanding performance.
